Chester William Nimitz, Sr. (/ˈnɪmɪts/; February 24, 1885 – February 20, 1966) was a fleet admiral of the United States Navy. William Lowndes Calhoun, great grandson of Vice President John Calhoun, was born July 13, 1884, in Palatka, Florida. He was an instructor at Annapolis from 1930 to 1932, and saw duty at Naval War College from 1939 to 1940. He served as commander of the Service Force Pacific Fleet from 1942 to 1945, and was promoted to vice admiral in June 1942. Calhoun died October 19, 1963. From the description of Calhoun, William L.
